55/45 rule: Killing Osama Bin Laden
It's hard to complete a project, to make everyone who is involved on the same page.
But even harder is to make a series of decisions if you are the leader.
Undoubtedly, one of the hardest decision for any US president to take was to tell his commanders to go into Pakistan and to kill Binladen. Could prove suicidal for the men.
Obama took that decision.
In an interview, he said they were only sure about a 55% chance of Binladen even residing in that building.
He believed that the small positive factor of 55% chance of success could lead to an opportunity far bigger.
But when asked, he said his goal was not solely to kill Binladen but to ensure that in any case the commanders should be safe and be brought back home.
Hence regardless they killed him or not, he wanted his men to return back unharmed.
And he got both right.
If you got the tiniest of advantage, double down on it, but how to get out of it safe regardless of any outcome should be a huge part of the goal itself.
