Europe v India; they charged us Rs.30,000 for this!
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel from India to Europe, and the contrasts between these two diverse regions were truly eye-opening. Today, I'd like to share my observations on the cultural differences I encountered during my stay in Europe and how it has led me to reflect on the importance of adaptability in business.
Self-Reliance vs. Assistance: Upon landing in Europe, one striking difference I noticed was the emphasis on self-reliance. Unlike India, where assistance is readily available for even the tiniest tasks, here, I had to approach a janitor to seek help in finding my way around the airport.
Embrace the DIY Culture: Throughout my stay, the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture was evident in various aspects of daily life. From fillingour own petrol to measuring and purchasing furniture sheets, the emphasis on self-sufficiency was evident.
The Price Tag of Convenience: One surprising aspect was the cost of services. In a situation where we needed a locksmith on a weekend, the service was quick, but the price was staggering (About 30k INR / 300 Euros!!) - a stark reminder of the premium attached to convenience.
Cash vs. Digital Payments: In contrast to India, where digital payments are widely embraced, many businesses in Europe still predominantly accept cash. It made me realize the importance of adapting payment methods to cater to regional preferences.
Embracing Life's Pleasures: Europeans love to live in the moment and savor life's pleasures. Even on a Thursday afternoon, I witnessed a bustling park filled with people, unwinding, drinking beer and enjoying themselves.
Saving vs. Splurging: The approach to finances differed as well. In Europe, the focus seemed to be on enjoying the present, while in India, saving for the future is a more common practice.
Warmth and Friendliness: A refreshing experience was the genuine warmth and friendliness of the people I encountered. Shop owners and cashiers greeted us with smiles and engaged in pleasant chit-chat.
Traffic Rules and Respect: Despite fewer visible police vehicles, Europeans strictly adhere to traffic rules, and even minor mistakes prompt apologies. It highlights the importance of societal norms in maintaining order.
As I continue my journey through Europe, I am eager to learn more about the rich diversity and unique qualities of different cultures. This experience has been a valuable reminder for businesses to adapt and tailor their approaches to resonate with the nuances of each geography.
