Last week, I gave a session on social media branding for startups in Kochi. During the talk, I decided to take an impromptu shot at explaining how exactly I like brands to sound like on social media. I gave an example of a cliché social media post that brands typically put out, something like "We are glad to announce that our app has attained 100k users and it goes on to show that how much our users love it etc..". I then suggested an alternative narration, showcasing another method of creating a post on the same announcement but with a different, human, storytelling approach.
The alternative narration went like this - on one slide, you can put the picture of your day 1 at your startup - a small room with you and your co-founder, and then tell the story of how you both decided to start up and the "why" behind it. On the next slide, showcase the picture of your current team and talk about how proud you are of them. The crowd I was talking to seemed to have an "aha!" moment, as they realized that they would always react more positively to a human, storytelling approach than to the corporate tone that the first post carried.
The point is, as social media users, we are always on the lookout for something authentic and relatable. Brands that can tell their stories in a human and engaging way are more likely to connect with their audience and create a lasting impression. So, what's your storytelling approach for social media?
