How to get installs for your app without spending a buck! (Bumble's early days)
I was catching an episode of a podcast featuring the founder of Bumble, and they shared a brilliant guerrilla marketing story from the app’s early days that’s too good not to mention.
Here’s the scoop: Bumble was trying to make its mark and they came up with this genius idea. They plastered posters across various universities that read, "No Facebook, no Snapchat, and no Bumble." While everyone was familiar with the first two, Bumble was still a mystery. This clever tactic played on students' fear of missing out, making them wonder, “What is Bumble and why am I not on it?”
But they didn’t stop there. They also had female students wear T-shirts emblazoned with the Bumble logo and name, and orchestrated them to enter classrooms a bit late—just so everyone’s attention would slide their way and take note of the brand.
Talk about a smart move to drum up interest and downloads with minimal spend. It’s a perfect example of how a little creativity goes a long way in guerrilla marketing!
