Shockvertising - The Secret Sauce in CRED ads
Shockvertising is a type of advertising that "deliberately, rather than inadvertently, startles and offends its audience by violating norms for social values and personal ideals" [Wikipedia]
Yup, that's what made the Rahul Dravid ad go viral. You got something that you never expected.
1) Seeing Rahul Dravid come back to the spot in an ad itself is "new". They didn't use anyone who you'd expect to be in an ad right now. Using someone who's in their prime now takes away that surprise element.
2) The obvious. Rahul is known for his calmness. This is where the shock value really lies. When I saw the ad for the first time, a lot of emotions just went through me, nostalgia, laugher.. and pure shock of seeing Rahul screening and hitting the rearview mirror off!
I couldn't wait to share the shock I got to anyone - someone around me! I even showed the ad to my mom :)
