What Zepto found inside a failed search
Someone typed a completely random collection of letters into the Zepto search bar.
There was no product name, brand or recognisable word in it.
Normally, an app would simply say:
“No results found.”
But Zepto showed a page filled with colourful toy trucks and children’s products.
The same random search in the screenshot produced an unrelated shampoo on Blinkit.
My first thought was that this was simply great attention to detail. But the more interesting question is how a company might arrive at a decision like this.
Imagine Zepto’s product team looking through thousands of unsuccessful searches.
Most companies would classify these searches as bad data and ignore them. But someone might have asked:
Who is typing all these random letters?
One possible answer is children.
A toddler gets hold of a parent’s phone, presses random keys and reaches the search-results page. Instead of showing a blank screen, Zepto shows something visually interesting to the child.
Toy trucks.
Bright packaging.
Products that can be understood without reading a single word.
The child notices them, shows them to the parent and, perhaps occasionally, one of those products enters the cart.
We don’t know whether this was Zepto’s actual reasoning. Gibberish could also come from pocket typing, accidental swipes, language-keyboard problems or simple experimentation.
But even if the toddler theory is wrong, the product lesson is still useful.
A failed search is not necessarily a failed customer
Most businesses design only for the actions they expect customers to take.
They optimise the correct Google search.
The correct button click.
The correctly filled lead form.
The perfect journey from advertisement to purchase.
Real customers don’t behave that neatly.
They misspell products. They search for things you don’t sell. They reach broken pages. They abandon payments. They ask the same confusing question repeatedly.
These behaviours usually get classified as errors.
But errors are also data.
E-commerce search research has shown that historical queries and the ways customers reformulate them can help businesses understand product intent and improve what gets ranked.
The useful question is not merely:
“How do we eliminate this error?”
It is:
“What is this error trying to tell us?”
If people repeatedly search for a product you don’t stock, that may be a category opportunity.
If prospects repeatedly misunderstand your pricing page, the problem may not be the prospect.
If customers abandon a form at the same question, that question may be creating unnecessary friction.
If visitors land on a page that no longer exists, the 404 page can either end the journey or redirect them towards something useful.
That is what makes this Zepto example interesting.
They may have converted a screen with zero commercial value into a merchandising surface.
Not by forcing another advertisement into the app, but by thinking about the context in which the mistake might be happening.
Of course, there is an uncomfortable side to this too. If a company is deliberately using children to create “pester power” and push parents into purchases, it moves from clever product design into ethically questionable territory.
So the lesson isn’t that every mistake should be aggressively monetised.
The lesson is that seemingly meaningless customer behaviour deserves investigation.
The best product teams don’t design only for the journey they drew on a whiteboard.
They design for the messy, distracted and unpredictable way people actually behave.
